Amherst Museum - Over 400 million years ago, Eurypterus Remipes, an extinct relative of the modern King crab, lived in the shallow sea that extended across New York State, roughly along the route of the Thruway. Fossils found in limestone quarried in Amherst are evidence of this former inland sea. E. Remipes is now New York State's official fossil. Glaciers were responsible for shaping the landscape of Western New York. About 13,000 years ago, after the last ice age, there was a huge glacial lake, called Lake Tonawanda, covered much of what would become Amherst.

The Arcade And Attica Railroad is actually, at least, the third company to operate trains between the villages of Arcade & Attica. Previous to the A&A were the Tonawanda Valley & Cuba*, and the Buffalo, Attica, & Arcade railroads. Today, the railroad continues to haul freight along the 15 mile right-of-way, in addition to the 7 1/2 mile passenger excursions. Since its incorporation in 1917, the A&A has scrapped seven steam engines, and purchased 3 diesels & 2 steamers, as well as numerous pieces of rolling stock, both for interchange service & online service.

The Holland Land Office Museum is a non-profit educational organization committed to preserving, interpreting, and promoting an interest in Genesee County, New York. In the late eighteenth century, the land that is now Western New York was virgin forest and the easiest passable route to the west. In the beginning of the nineteenth century, historic Genesee County, frequently called "The United States' First Frontier," was the stopping place for thousands of pioneers moving west. Settlers from New England, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and even the Southern States, settled throughout the Holland Purchase.

On the east side of Delaware Avenue where it leaves the north side of Niagara Square stood the grandest of Buffalo's Gothic homes, the John Hollister house. He erected his house, which resembled the Gothic designs of the eminent A. J. Davis, in 1852 and resided there until 1858. In that year the dwelling was bought by Millard Fillmore, who came to live there several years after his presidency. Millard Fillmore bought the house for himself and his second wife, Carolyn McIntosh, deciding that his home at 180 Franklin was not grand enough for an ex-President.

Buffalo Points of Interest

  • Buffalo is home to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, housing one of the world's finest collections of modern painting and sculpture.

  • UB recently acquired the Anderson Gallery, which Art News has hailed as "a shrine to a world-class collection of contemporary art."

  • The nationally renowned Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra performs in Kleinhans Music Hall. Designed by the famed Finnish father-and-son team, Eliel and Eero Saarinen, Kleinhans itself is widely admired both for its acoustic qualities and for its architectural beauty.

  • UB's own Slee Concert Hall is also a rich cultural resource for the Western New York community, giving over two hundred concerts per year.

  • Hallwall's Contemporary Arts Center art space in downtown Buffalo showcases progressive visual art and other avant-garde cultural performance.

  • The theater district in downtown Buffalo offers New York State's richest and most extensive network of theaters outside of New York City. There is something for every theater lover, from lavish operas, musicals, Broadway shows, and ballets at the ornate Shea's Performing Arts Center, to contemporary plays at Studio Arena Theater, to productions of Samuel Beckett and Oscar Wilde plays at the intimate Irish Classical Theater.

  • Shakespeare enthusiasts can also enjoy the Bard's work within Buffalo's city-limits at "Shakespeare in Delaware Park," a free, open-air, seasonal production.

  • Nearby, New York's Chautauqua Institution-a famed gathering place for artists and scholars since it was founded in the 19th century-attracts 180,000 guests each season.

  • Buffalo has been home to many literary figures, including Mark Twain and F. Scott Fitzgerald-and more recently, Lauren Belfer, author of the acclaimed historical novel City of Light, a portrait of Buffalo at the turn of the century.

"CITY OF LIGHT

Buffalo Has Abundant Arts And Entertainment…

Buffalo was the first city in the nation to have electric street lights. Buffalo has a longstanding reputation as the "City of Light." The nickname is just as appropriate in a figurative sense: Buffalo arts are consistently in the limelight, attracting national and international attention.
